Abstract/Summary:
There has been a growing interest in the utilization of energy dissipation devices for earthquake resistant design of new and existing buildings. Many types of energy dissipation devices have been developed. These devices have very strong potential for improving the dynamic performance of the building systems. Meanwhile, soil-structure interaction has been recognized as an important influence on the dynamic response of building systems, especially when the building is situated on soft soil. A need to understand the influence of the soil-structure interaction on the dynamic behavior building systems with damping devices was recognized.; To help develop this understanding, the influence of the soil-structure interaction on dynamic characteristic of building systems with energy dissipation devices is investigated. A new lumped parameter model which effectively represents the dynamic stiffness of the foundation-soil system over a wide range of frequencies was developed. The energy dissipation devices were assumed to be interstory viscous type and a generalized modal superposition method was used for the analysis. The study covered buildings with low, medium and high fundamental periods. Important parameters, including soil shear wave velocity, building height to foundation width ratio (H/a), and building mass to foundation mass (M R) ration, are also considered in this study.; It is found in this study that, for fixed-base building systems, increasing damping increases natural frequencies and overall modal damping, and decreases maximum and RMS relative story displacements. When soil-structure interaction is taken into account, natural frequencies and story displacements decrease. The effectiveness of energy dissipation devices in increasing the overall damping also decreases. Although the (H/a) and (M R) ratios effect the influence of soil-structure interaction on the natural frequencies and overall modal damping of building system with and without energy dissipation devices, these ratios have very little effect on the influence of soil-structure interaction on the story displacement.; It is found in this study that soil-structure interaction has more influence on building with energy dissipation devices than on building without the devices.
