As a natural calamity,earthquake is very random and unpredictable which always happens without our noticing so that may leave us much huge catastrophe.Once the strong earthquake happens,it is uneconomic and even impossible to require the structure not to be damaged.To decrease the dynamic reaction of the building under the earthquake and improve its own seismic performance are priority to guarantee the safety of people's life and property when the earthquake comes.Generally,in order to prevent the building from being severely damaged or even collapsed as a whole while the strong earthquake happening during the design period,the civil engineer usually divides the components of the structure into main component and secondary component.Allowing the secondary component being damaged while the earthquake so that the main components could be protected well,which means to make the structure damage could be under designers' prediction and control.The energy dissipation design is the kind of the advanced design idea to realize the safe guarantee and decreasing one degree of the seismic design by placing some active and passive energy dissipation devices to ease the structural earthquake dynamic reactions.The original structure and the additional energy dissipation devices form a new structural system together which could be called energy dissipation structure.Compared with the original structure,the new energy dissipation structure would decrease the dynamic characteristic of the building by adding the energy dissipation devices so that the seismic performance of the whole structure could be improved which would make the building much safer and more reliable.This paper mainly studies one kind of velocity related energy dissipation called viscous energy dissipation device.To build the model of one real construction sample added viscous energy dissipation device by using Midas Gen software,meanwhile bring out a modified method statement based on the original energy dissipation structure.After large amount of calculation and model analysis,the additional damp ratio of the original structure could raised by 5%,comparing the floor drift and shear force by the time history analysis using different earthquake waves.According to the calculation analysis,it could be found that the seismic performance of the added viscous energy dissipation device structure is much better than the original structure's;specified for this project,when the additional damping ratio raised from 5% to 15% by viscous energy dissipation device,the floor drift and shear force could be reduced by 40%-60% accordingly.
