Abstract/Summary:
This study develops a simulation model to assist in the formulation of forest management plans. The model simulates the growth of a forest and the long-term effects of various management activities on the forest structure and financial performance of these activities. The simulation model differs from existing forest simulation models as it: (1) permits changing the size of the forest's compartments, (2) allows the user to decide when a specific compartment should be harvested, (3) allows the user to specify if one or more compartment(s) will not be harvested, and (4) allows for the construction of new roads (temporary or permanent).; A conceptual model presents the scope of the simulation model, requirements, data structures, data flows, and algorithms needed to implement the model. The model uses a Visual Basic program with a graphical user interface to facilitate file handling, data processing, and management of the results. A verification process was used to validate that the model operates correctly. The general purpose simulation presents a computerized approach for evaluating the dynamic effects of harvest scheduling alternatives on forest resources.
