A validation of the translation of the Baker Functional Memory Test into the Spanish language

Abstract/Summary:
This study attempted to translate and validate the Baker Functional Memory Test (BFMT), (Baker et al., 1993), into the Spanish language. This study investigated the way in which Spanish speaking Simulators would perform on a memory test that is used to detect malingering of memory deficits in the English speaking population. The study utilized a group of Spanish speaking volunteers from a normal and a head-injured population. Replicating the procedures of the BFMT, subjects were compared under distraction and no-distraction conditions. The results indicated that the Spanish speaking population performed as predicted by the data from the English speaking population. The Simulator group performed significantly worse than the Head Injury and the Control groups under the no-distraction condition, and significantly worse overall, detecting malingering by the difference in their performance. The study demonstrated that the BFMT was reliable and valid for use with Spanish speaking individuals, without bias.
