Abstract/Summary:
This treatise presents an annotated list and description of the double concertos and other concert works for violin, cello and orchestra. With the exception of the Concerto in A Minor, Op 102 by Johannes Brahms, performers have generally overlooked this genre, and as a result these works have fallen into obscurity. Although over sixty pieces have been composed for the combination of violin, cello and orchestra, even well informed musicians can name only a few. The ultimate purpose of this compilation is to familiarize musicians with these pieces, thereby promoting both the study and performance of them.;The compositions are organized alphabetically by the composers' last names, and a chronological list of the composers is also included. Each annotation consists of a brief biography of the composer and a description of their style. A short discussion of the concerto follows and includes first performance information when available, important features of the work, a description of technical difficulties, and publication and recording information. The last chapter of the treatise is devoted to the works that, for various reasons, are unobtainable for study; in these cases, all of the known information is given.
