The twentieth century, an age of exchange and integration of various cultures and thoughts, witnessed a rapid change in the techniques of orchestration, whose sound patterns and the timbrearrangement went far beyond the field of the traditional views on orchestration. The factorspropelling the revolution in orchestration were naturally influenced by the development of theelectronic music. The nature of this revolution in orchestration is the various developments ofacoustic parameters. The composers, of whom Ligeti was one of the representatives, explored newmusic language in the perspective of acoustic characteristic, developed the performing skills of themusical instrument with the addition of the new concepts of orchestration and introduced the ideasof the electronic music into orchestration. As one of the most characteristic composers in the twentieth century, Ligeti composed manyworks of profound influence with his unique musical language and personal ways of orchestration, working out landmark contributions to the composing techniques of modern music. Ligeti made acombination of his continuous exploration of the traditional ways of orchestration and the timbreideas of the electrical music. In his unique musical language, Ligeti initiated the concept of“micropolyphony” and put this technique into his works, which became one important techniquein the polyphony in the twentieth century.Among Ligeti’s numerous works which are of different periods and ideas of creation, twoconcertos, which are of the same types and different thoughts of creation, are chosen for acomparing study of acoustic orchestration.Cello Concerto is one important works in the mid period of his composing years. Instead ofapplying the overstaffed organization of orchestra program such as that applied in Atmosphere inthis works, Ligeti employed the indoor orchestra program to produce delicate sound ranging.Ligeti was influenced by the electronic music in this period and this could be proved by theapplication of electronic music thoughts. The Piano Concerto is divided into only two movements, which are respectively characteristic of static and dynamic sound patterns.Violin Concerto is Ligeti’s later works, which is recognized as one of his most excellentworks. In creating this works in his later composing years, Ligeti made a perfect combination ofthe character of exploration of the vanguard music and the traditional structural thinking. This thesis consists of four parts. In the first part a brief introduction of the life of Ligeti andhis composing ideas are given. From the second to the fourth part, which is the main content ofthis thesis, an analysis of the acoustic characters and orchestration of the piano concerto and theviolin concerto is presented with a comparing study of some more acoustic information aboutthese two concertos. In the conclusion, a summary of Ligeti’s orchestration ideas in his mid andlater years ends this thesis.
