Abstract/Summary:
This study focuses on the relationship between racial ideology and time orientation for African Americans. The Multidimensonal Inventory of Black Identity (MIBI) and the Zimbardo Time Perspective Inventory (ZTPI) were used to assess the relationship between racial ideology and time orientation. Furthermore, this study investigated the role of self construal as a moderator of the racial ideology/time orientation relationship. The Self Construal Scale (SCS) was used to assess the degree to which individuals viewed themselves as either independent or interdependent members of society. A total of 252 participants were recruited via the internet or in person and were administered the MIBI, ZTPI, and SCS to assess their racial ideology, time orientation, and self construal respectively. Racial ideology was shown to significantly predict time orientation. Furthermore, self construal moderated the relationship between racial ideology and time orientation such that high or low independent or interdependent self construal significantly predicted whether participants with Nationalist or Humanist ideologies viewed the past as positive or negative.
