Abstract/Summary:
This dissertation explores Mexican religion in the context of national politics and rural parish relationships during the early nineteenth century transition from colonial system to independent nation. This study analyzes the politics of religion beyond dichotomies of conservative and liberal political programs. Instead, this work investigates the role of religious authority, proper behavior, and gender and generational relationships in disputes over the place of Catholicism in the nation and in local communities.
