Abstract/Summary:
This dissertation is an interpretive study of Hispanic perceptions of prime-time programming on Univisión. This study finds that Hispanics perceive programming on Univisión to contain narrow representations of the various Hispanic subgroups. Using constructivism as the theoretical framework and focus groups as the method for collecting data, three focus groups, of eight participants each, were formed from the three largest Hispanic subgroups: Mexicans, Cubans and Puerto Ricans. Each group met separately at different locations to discuss their views and interpretations of Univisión programs. The sample was drawn from the Hispanic population residing in central New Jersey, USA. During the discussions, each group argued about different ideas and areas related to Univisión programs. The results indicated areas of satisfaction and dissatisfaction with Univisión programs. Suggestions for further research on Hispanic audiences are offered.
