Abstract/Summary:
As the 21st Century has arrived, African Americans are still searching for a leadership philosophy that can best assist them with eradicating ill-fated conditions plaguing the African American community. Conditions such as high crime rates, teenage pregnancy, violence and drug abuse cause African American communities to be constantly overlooked as possible sights for economic development strategies and opportunities. Failed attempts at improving these conditions are often linked to African American leadership philosophies.; The objective of this study is to contribute to the improvement of African American communities by determining which leadership philosophy is preferred by African Americans. The two dominant leadership philosophies that are and have been advocated by past and present African American leaders are a traditional political leadership philosophy and an entrepreneurial leadership philosophy. Both philosophies have been used as mechanisms toward improving African American communities. However, the question remains which philosophy do African Americans prefer?; This study was conducted by creating a survey instrument and polling African Americans in Auburn, Alabama, and Opelika, Alabama. Respondents voluntarily participated in this study with the assurance of their complete anonymity. Data gathered from respondents were statistically analyzed through SPSS 9.0 for Windows.
