Research has shown that instructor emotional intelligence is correlated with teaching effectiveness and teaching success in on-campus courses. In online courses, the lack of academic success is of increasing concern among higher education administrators, with online courses showing significantly higher failure rates than on-campus courses. The problem identified in this study was that further understanding of the relationship between instructor emotional intelligence and student performance in an online postsecondary setting is needed. The purpose of this quantitative, correlational study was to provide further understanding of the relationship between student perception of instructor emotional intelligence and student performance in an online postsecondary setting.
