A plain-text diplomatic edition of the unpublished autobiography of Elizabeth Oakes Smith (1806-1893), American poet, novelist, journalist, and feminist. Accompanying the text are an explanation of editorial methods, tables of emendations (including alternate readings), textual notes, annotations, end-of-line hyphenations of compound words, and a bibliography of Oakes Smith's work. The editor's introduction includes biographical information on Oakes Smith, an examination of the literary and historical dimensions of the autobiography, and a discussion of the work in the context of recent autobiographical theory, especially from a feminist perspective.
