Abstract/Summary:
The juvenile justice system in the United States is often criticized as being ineffective and expensive. As society demands more accountability, researchers must look for ways to improve the system. Educators and schools must contribute to this reformation. The juvenile justice system and the public school system must communicate and share information to aid in the rehabilitation of and prevention of juvenile delinquents.;The intent of this study was to research and evaluate the communication between juvenile justice agencies and the public school system, specifically within the state of Florida. The design of this study was qualitative in nature. Secondary principals, prosecuting attorneys and defense attorneys dealing specifically with juveniles were interviewed. The interviews focused on the sharing of information between juvenile authorities and public schools.;Various programs throughout the central Florida area, available for juvenile offenders were reviewed. Attorneys and school officials were asked to give their opinion regarding the success of these programs, especially considering school success and recidivism rates. The participants were asked to comment on positive aspects of the juvenile justice system within the state of Florida. They were also asked to reflect on recent changes in the juvenile justice system that have impacted school leaders. Recommendations for improving interagency communication were provided by the researcher.
