Abstract/Summary:
Trauma exposure can have a behavioral and emotional impact on a child, though it can be difficult for clinicians to link symptoms to chronic trauma. The effects of trauma are not encapsulated by any existing disorder and they mimic symptoms of other disorders. The purpose of this study was to explore the differential diagnostic process of clinicians. This study sought to identify how clinicians with various years of experience, working various types of communities, and varying degrees of trauma training diagnose a fictitious client. The researcher hypothesized there would be a significant difference across clinicians working in areas where community violence is prevalent and those that work in areas with less violence, across clinicians in their profession for fewer than 10 years and those in their profession for more than 10 years, and across trauma-trained clinicians and non-trauma trained clinicians. Findings of this study were not statistically significant.
