Executive team stability and school board members' attitudes towards school finance and governance practices in selected Nassau County, Long Island, New York school districts

This study examined the relationship among school board stability, superintendent stability, and the presence of a former school business official as superintendent and school board members' attitudes towards four components of school finance practices: Financial Forecasting, Financial Planning, Financial Management, Municipal Responsibility, and four components of governance practices: Professional Leadership, Policy Orientation, Structured Decision Making, and Fact-Based Management. This research also examined the relationship among board members' attitudes towards four components of school finance practices and their demographic characteristics of gender, children attending district schools, years of board service, years of education, and age.;The study was limited to members of boards of education holding elected positions in 15 public school districts in Nassau County, Long Island, New York. The survey instrument used a five-point Likert scale consisting of six demographic items, 27 governance items, and 14 school finance items.;The research findings indicated that there was no significant statistical relationship among executive team stability and school board members' attitudes towards school finance and governance practices. The results of this study indicated that correlations exist between governance and school finance practices among school board members. Additionally, there were no significant statistical relationships among school finance practices and board members' demographic characteristics.
