Abstract/Summary:
This study explored the parenting experiences of mothers residing with their young children in a residential drug treatment facility, as they related to the perceived support of the social environment of the facility. Supportive functions of the program structure, the staff and mother-to-mother were examined through the Self-In-Relations theory and the family-centered service model.; Data was collected in 2001 from ten mothers in four programs in New York City through three interviews, a questionnaire, and a scale.; Support, being perceived, was found significant in sustaining and containing the mothers through the challenging treatment process and in facilitating a positive parenting experience—an improved maternal empathy, parent-child relationship, and parental self. This experience was an integral part of healthy relationships the mothers were developing with themselves and others. The holding environment of the treatment facility fostered reflection, exploration and improvement on their selves and relationships.
