Abstract/Summary:
The purpose of this study was to gain consensus from a panel of expert practitioners in adult education regarding the behaviors that facilitate and enhance learning in the adult classroom. The methodology used in this research was the Delphi Technique, a procedure that utilizes a group of individuals, called a panel of experts, who have extensive knowledge of the topic under consideration. The participants in this study were expert practitioners in adult education who met the established criteria.; Thirty people were convened to complete this study, from various locations across the country. A total of three rounds were conducted in this Delphi with consensus coming in Round Three. The study was conducted using an email account specifically set up for this research project. All questionnaires and responses were delivered electronically.; As a result of this study the panel of experts identified behaviors that can be implemented by adult education practitioners to enhance and facilitate learning. Eight categories emerged from the data. The top three ranked behaviors in each category are presented as the behaviors which are utilized on a regular basis by the panel of experts.; It is suggested that additional research be focused on discovering the nonverbal behaviors from this study that have the greatest effect in the adult learning context. Another recommendation from the study is to design research that extracts the nonverbal behaviors that facilitate and enhance learning through Distance Education of all types.; The behaviors discovered in this study do fit within a professional training curriculum and in an educational competency curriculum for adult educators designed to develop the proficiencies of the training professional, those in higher education, and the GED educator. Integrating the behaviors within this study into a competency curriculum would provide the participants time to study and practice the behaviors in seminar, workshop, or other educational settings.
