Abstract/Summary:
The following research examined the effect of one cognitive component of group interaction on several established components of group effectiveness. Specifically, it looked at the impact of transactive memory on the development of collective efficacy and collective efficacy's subsequent impact on group performance through group goals and goal commitment. Transactive memory was found to be a consistent predictor of group performance. The development of transactive memory was also examined. It was found that transactive memory was significantly impacted by the training they received, either as an intact group or as individuals. When groups were trained together they had significantly higher transactive memory behaviors. This effect remained present throughout over the duration of the study. The importance of transactive memory and collective efficacy are discussed in the context of existing models of group effectiveness and other cognitive determinants of motivation and performance.
