Abstract/Summary:
The problem. The purpose of this study was to investigate the integration of general management capability with the organization's information system infrastructure and its relation to the organization's growth as it considers expansion into the international marketplace.; Method. A structured questionnaire was used. Sixty-seven returned questionnaires from randomly selected organizations throughout the United States were analyzed. The Pearson correlations were used to test for the significance of relationships, and Students t-tests were used to test the differences between organizations that did business primarily in the domestic marketplace and those that did business in both the domestic and international marketplaces.; Results. The results of the study showed that managerial capability and organizational size had the strongest relationships to organization growth in corporations expanding into the international marketplace. For organizations doing business in the domestic market, both level of information system infrastructure and extent of integration between management capability and information system infrastructure were found to be related to organizational growth.; The results of the study supported the premise that there are significant differences between domestic and international organizations in all four of the factors examined: General Management Capability, Information System Infrastructure, Level of Integration, and Organizational Growth.; The overall conclusion is that organizations expanding into the international marketplace that seek only to improve their management capability or that seek only to improve their information systems infrastructure are not as competitive as firms that seek to optimize the integration between the two. Firms that consider the level of integration between general management capability and its information system infrastructure are in a far better position to achieve success in expanding into the international marketplace.
