Abstract/Summary:
The rate of dissolution of molybdenite (MoS(,2)) was measured in aqueous chlorine solutions. Under the limitation of Cl(,2) flow rate, the kinetics were controlled by the reaction of the molybdenite at the edge of individual platelets. The presence of chlorine is crucial for the molybdenite dissolution. This was determined by several electrochemical experiments in single and dual cells. A model for the leaching of molybdenite in chlorine is presented which accounts for chlorine concentration, particle size range, and temperature. An industrial process is also proposed that seems promising in view of the ease of dissolution of molybdenite and promising economical chemical recovery.
