Abstract/Summary:
The research reported in this paper is aimed at providing control strategy and topologies to improve the reliability of a field oriented induction motor drive.; In this paper a new, improved induction motor control strategy is proposed for an induction machine which allows for continuous, disturbance free operation of the drive even with complete loss of one leg of the inverter or motor phase.; Computer simulation results are implemented in hardware to verify the theory for maintaining the same rotating MMF after one phase is open circuited. A complete analysis of the multiphase machine, with an even number of phases and odd number of phases, is included.; A motor-winding short-circuit detection scheme is proposed so that a motor-winding short-circuit fault could be detected early. With this early detection, a cut-out operation can be implemented till an overhaul of the motor is possible.; The analysis for sinusoidal distribution windings can be extended to non-sinusoidal distribution windings. Hence, the recommended control strategy is not limited by the stator winding distribution.; A new, improved induction motor control topology is also proposed which allows for continuous, disturbance-free operation of the drive with a failed short-circuited switch in one leg of the inverter. A complete control strategy combined with a failed short-circuited switch and an open circuit fault is included.
