Abstract/Summary:
This dissertation presents results of experimental and analytical research into the operation and performance of utility-interconnected photovoltaic systems. An energy conversion test facility featuring a 5.5 kW photovoltaic array has been designed, specified, and is available for ongoing research in this area. Research on maximum power point tracking, islanding, photovoltaic array measurements, and maximum power transfer is presented. Computer simulation of system steady-state and transient performance is also provided. Major results include the discovery of a fundamental error in conventional methods of measuring current-voltage characteristics of photovoltaic arrays, the creation of a simple but accurate model of a photovoltaic system in the islanding mode, and a proposed definition for a photovoltaic array energy utilization factor. Finally, use of the energy conversion test facility as a continuing research facility is discussed.
