Abstract/Summary:
A set of assays on the influence of some factors on pepper wilt and on the disease control parameters has been made research the resistance of Capsicum annuum to Verticillium dahliae. Among the established parameters as the "average infection," "disease index" and "relative weight" of pepper plants, the last one has been shown the most effective in the evaluation of the resistance to V. dahliae on pepper.;Other factors studied in the pathosystem Verticillium-Capsicum were the influence of the pathogen isolate used in the inoculations and the relationship between the disease symptoms and the fungus colonization of host vascular tissues. Among the nineteen pathogen isolates analyzed, three different aggressively groups have been distinguished. In the same way the plant ability in stopping the fungus closer to root apex in observed as only resistance mechanism.;Due to the low resistance levels in the pepper varieties belonging to the more cultivated specie (C. annuum) different inter and intra specific crosses have been made investigating the genetic control of resistance to V. dahliae in C. annuum, and in order to extend the knowledge about the barriers to hybridization among the five Capsicum cultivated species. The effectiveness of Verticillium resistance transfer existing in some other Capsicum species to C. annuum has been demonstrated too.;A polygenic model of resistance heredity has been obtained, where three resistance and two modifying genes could be involved. According to this model the use of recurrent selection as the only effective method in pepper breeding for resistance to Verticillium is recommended.
