ice plants produce two groups of diterpenoid phytoalexins, momilactones and oryzalexins, in the defense of the plant against infection by microbial pathogens. An elicitor bioassay based on the rate of cyclization of GGPP to the diterpene hydrocarbon precursors of phytoalexins was developed with rice cell suspension cultures to identify substances that act as elicitors for the production of phytoalexins in rice.
