Abstract/Summary:
The Polish cavalry played one of the most influential roles in the defense of Poland from the German aggression in September 1939. Due to lack of sources and the misinterpretation of the ones available, it was for year engulfed in such myths as charging with their sabers on German armor. Therefore, it was seen as the representation of Polish army's lack of modernization. However, the Polish cavalry was not a backward formation on the battlefield. It proved many times that it was capable of halting German attacks. It used its horses mainly for transportation and fought on foot using anti-armor weapons and armored vehicles. The formation was modernizing at the same pace as the rest of the major armies around the world, however being the first country attacked, it was unable to completely finish the process.
