A Thousand Plateaus (Mille Plateaux, 1980) is an essay in poststructuralist cultural analysis co-authored by philosopher Gilles Deleuze and psychoanalyst Felix Guattari. It applies contemporary theoretical approaches to a wide range of disciplines in the humanities and sciences. The focus of the work is the concept of subjectification, or the production of human subjectivity as an historical variable.;The English translation is preceded by a translator's introduction. It traces the authors' philosophical background (in particular, their debt to Spinoza, Bersgon, and Nietzsche) and compares A Thousand Plateaus to earlier works by Deleuze and Guattari with respect to a number of issues in linguistics, semiotics, psychology, and politics. A bibliography of Deleuze and Guattari's work in French and English follows the translation.
