Abstract/Summary:
During adolescence, individuals encounter significant neurological, cognitive, social, and emotional changes, as well as an increase in autonomy and responsibility. Parents and peers have a significant influence on the decisions adolescents make. Researchers have found parental monitoring can help decrease adolescents' substance use, which is a common contemporary issue that adolescents often face. To remedy the issue of adolescent substance use, programs in schools positively influence adolescents and help decrease their use. This study examined the relationship between parental monitoring and adolescent substance use behaviors. Archival data from the Naperville Community Outreach Youth and Family Services program was used to consider the relationship between parental monitoring and substance use. Overall, results indicated that adolescents with low levels of parental monitoring had the highest substance use. Additionally, adolescents with high parental monitoring had the second highest substance use rate. Overall, the results indicate that a medium level of parental monitoring produces the lowest rate of substance use.
