Abstract/Summary:
Vedic psychology, the human science of India's sacred tradition, offers a paradigm shift that extends and deepens psychoanalytic intuition to disclose the root cause of suffering. Transcendental MeditationTM provides the therapia, serving Soul, that heals this wound at its origin, to restore the full promise of life. Narcissistic, borderline, and hysterical disorders may be understood as symptoms characterizing an empty self, the presence of absence of Soul, that has arisen from a primordial work of negation---the dissociation of the I-ness of the embodied ego from its spiritual Self. This splitting is due to a primeval trauma at the caesura of birth. Nameless dread overshadows the newborn when, lacking spiritual holding and containment, the emergent self-consciousness of the baby confronts the coupling of Eros---the love of life, in Thanatos---the valley of death.;Primitive instinctual defenses irrupt against this catastrophic turbulence, whereby the ego dissociates from the awe-fullness of spiritual truth and reality; and falsely identifies with the physical body as the creator and ground of consciousness and being. The Vedic teachings assert that the mirage and miasma of false identification is the root of suffering. Bearing the cross and crucifixion of Spirit and physicality, humanity questions the meaning of being in relation to the inevitability of death. This dark night of the soul recurs throughout life, evoked by moods of dread and melancholy in the face of loss and broken dream.;A cloud of unknowing overshadows consciousness, and enshrouds life in a ceaseless blank mourning and melancholy. The haunting of fear and depression voices the lament of the gods who have become our symptoms, to invoke the work of return---the heroic journey of the embodied ego home to its spiritual Self and birthright. This is the metanoia, the rite of passage and initiatory crisis of psychology in the kairos of the Aquarian age. Vedic psychology and Transcendental Meditation provide the understanding and method of therapy that heal the root cause of human suffering, and return the sense of self to true spiritual consciousness and being.;Keywords: Transcendental, meditation, spirituality, consciousness, being, self, psyche.
