Abstract/Summary:
This study examined psychological assessments from 106 adolescent sex offenders who were adjudicated males participating in outpatient treatment for their sexual offense. The purpose of this study was to analyze the offenders' intellectual, personality and academic difficulties as contributing factors to the severity of their sexual offenses. Testing measures included pre-treatment Wechsler, MMPI, MAPI and WRAT-R. Scaled scores were compared to their offense at the time of arrest. Five arrest offense groupings involving sexual battery, vaginal penetration, sodomy, oral copulation and fondling, and demographic information were compared to the offenders' test scores using statistical analyses. Overall results indicated the offenders' intelligence and personality characteristics were in the average range. There were no between group differences in intelligence or MMPI scales. Some of the offenders' MAPI and WRAT-R scores revealed specific problems. Although a specific typology was not obtained for the arrest or the adjudication groupings, the arrest group's severity of offense was related to the offenders' impulsivity and lack of introversive tendencies. Offenders appeared to have academic problems. Specific research recommendations were discussed.
