Abstract/Summary:
The primary purpose of this study was to determine the immediate effect of a Slide/Tape Program in Concepts of Physical Education at the Chapman Elementary School in Chapman, Kansas. More specifically, it was the study of the effect of knowledge of fitness and physical activity and attitude toward physical activity. The 257 students were divided into a primary level, Grades 1, 2, and 3; and an intermediate level, Grades 4, 5, and 6.;A two-way analysis was conducted on the knowledge index for the primary level and a two-way analysis was conducted on the knowledge index at the intermediate level to determine if any overall effect had occurred during the treatment. A three-factor analysis was conducted for all grades on the attitude index. Descriptive analysis was done on both the knowledge and attitude index to look at specific item differences.;A significant difference in knowledge between the students who received the treatment and students who did not receive the treatment was observed, as measured by multiple choice test scores. A significant difference in attitude was observed in those who were given the treatment and those who were not. A significant difference in attitude was observed in those who are in different grade levels. All attitude was measured by a 10 question index.;Recommendations for future studies include an easier way to mark the knowledge index at the primary level; follow-up studies of the same students in one, three, and five years to determine long term effects and to see if attitude is specific to grade level or to the students involved; additional studies at each grade level individually; and that examples be given on the attitude index especially on those with negative responses.;The research design used was a Solmon Four Test Design. Students in the treatment group received a slide/tape program on the Concepts of Physical Education, during a four week period. Students in the non-treatment group received a slide/tape program on different sports.
