Abstract/Summary:
This study was an attempt to understand more fully teacher talk (native and foreigner) in the classroom. A comparison was made between the social/pedagogical functions and strategies of teacher talk in two middle school classes: a regular Language Arts class and an English as a Second Language class. The same teacher taught both. The study was basically qualitative in nature although some elementary quantitative measures were used. The findings revealed rather striking differences particularly relating to the affective domain.
