Abstract/Summary:
The problem of this study was the identification and categorization of the personality characteristics of human information seekers when the need was analysis or evaluation. Specifically, the purposes of this study were (1) to investigate personality characteristics of the individual; (2) to investigate which information seeking behaviors distinguish evaluators from analysts; (3) to distinguish personality characteristics of both groups.;The results revealed that all the subjects scored significantly high in Personal Relations even though this measured personality characteristic had no significant relation with the ability to satisfy the information needs of analysis or evaluation. Secondly, more subjects demonstrated a high level of ability to satisfy the need to analyze than to evaluate, which supports the notion that evaluation is a higher level complexity than analysis. Finally, the results revealed that the personality characteristics of Ascendancy, Responsibility, and Cautiousness are positively correlated with the need to analyze and negatively correlated with the need to evaluate. In addition, Emotional Stability, Sociability, Original Thinking and Vigor were related positively to the need to evaluate while negatively correlated with the analysis need.;Data on eight personality characteristics were collected through the Gordon Personal Inventory and the Gordon Personal Profile to measure the personality characteristics of Cautiousness, Original Thinking, Personal Relations, Vigor, Ascendancy, Responsibility, Emotional Stability, and Sociability; a problem-Situation instrument, based on Bloom's Taxonomy, was used to measure subjects' efficiency and effectiveness in terms of information seeking behaviors. 50 subjects were randomly chosen from 250 graduate students enrolled at the School of Library & Information Science.
