Abstract/Summary:
The next generation will soon replace the retiring Baby Boomer workforce population. This study examines whether current best practice program approaches can assist managers in developing Millennial leaders. Using a systematic review process, an examination of thirty published articles and the reported results of prevailing leadership development explore developing needed competencies in the rising Millennial generation. The research effort reports the results of a thematic analysis of primary and systematic review studies that integrate the findings of the selected studies. Using a screening process, the Critical Appraisal Skills Programme (CASP) tool, and a rigorous evaluation process, the selected primary studies review identified the program approaches that performed best to develop shortfalls in leadership competencies. A configurative iterative process further revealed five overarching themes: leading change, leading people, driving results, developing business acumen, and building coalition competencies supported developing Millennial leaders using best practice program approaches. This study advances the understanding of how managers can use best practices for Millennial leadership development. More studies that are empirical are needed to provide managers with evidence for determining programs that best develop specific competencies to facilitate Millennial leadership development.
