Most of the matter in our university exists in the form of plasma. Electron Beam Ion Traps, EBITs, are excellent devices for the generation and control of hot and tenuous plasma, such as those found in solar flares or Tokamak fusion machines. Hence EBITs give us an effective means to study and analyze some of the physical processes occurring in hot plasmas. Studying the spectral lines emit-ted from plasmas is an important tool in the diagnostics of this form of matter, for example comparing bound state transitions with so-called satellite line transi-tions can give important temperature information. The spectra of He- and Li-like Argon are commonly used in the diagnostics of controlled fusion plasmas. One of the topics of this thesis concerns experimental investigations of satellite spectra for He-like Argon carried out at the Shanghai EBIT laboratory. Applications of these lines to plasma diagnostics are also discussed. The thesis contains three sections:?Satellite lines from the KLn series of dielectronic recombination (DR) res-onances for Argon, i.e. 1s2-1s 2l nl, have been studied at the Shanghai EBIT and using a flat crystal spectrometer (FCS) to observe the resulting photons. The spectrometer was calibrated using the 1s2-1s 2p lines on He-like Argon. Detailed measurements for both electron impact excitation and KLL to KLO DR resonance excitation have been made. Satellites lines from KLO and above, i.e. for the exci-tation of 1s 21 nl where n>5 could not be individually resolved, and hence could not be measured separately. Calculations based on a Corona Equilibrium (CE) model and including detailed energy level information have been done and good agreement between the experimental and calculated spectra was achieved.?In view of the success mentioned above, a program for plasma simulation based on a CE model has been developed. Energy levels such as 1s nl, 1s2 nl, 1s nl n.l. (n<=5, n.<=9, l and l. can be all allowed values for the corresponding n and n.) can be included in the model calculations. The good agreement between these codes and EBIT experiments shows the reliability of the calculations. The codes were then applied to study Argon spectra from the TEXTOR-94 Tokamak. The comparison of these results will be discussed in the thesis.?Following the work on simulating the TEXTOR-94 spectra calculations were done for He-like Iron and the corresponding satellites. The results show that the high n satellites and cascade process can not be ignored.
