Objective: To establish the pulse information database of ancient medical records related to emotions and explore the pulse manifestation law. Methods: Using pulse, Cun, Guan, Chi as the primary keywords and emotional words as secondary keywords, pulse information database of ancient medical records related to emotions was established including 1328 cases with pulse record screened from Chinese Medical Canon which were caused by emotions or manifested as emotional symptoms. Information was analyzed by SPSS 13.0 for Windows to convert the text data into digital variables as 1 and 0 so as to carry out statistical analysis and data mining. Gender, age, etiology, symptoms, emotions, medical record category, pulse manifestation category, pulse manifestations of Left Cun, Left Guan, Left Chi, Right Cun, Right Guan, Right Chi, etc. were analyzed by frequency analysis and correlations between the four pairs of variables including emotion and symptom, emotion and pulse manifestation, symptom and pulse manifestation, emotion & pulse manifestation as the comprehensive factor and pulse manifestation were analyzed by the canonical correlation analysis. Results: Pulse information database of ancient medical records related to emotions was established and frequency analysis indicated the common pulse manifestations were taut, fast, thready, smooth, deep, large pulses, etc. and emotions were anger, anxiety, fright, vexation, depression, dispiritedness, etc. in turn. The common pulse manifestations of anger, anxiety, fright and depression were taut and fast pulses, etc., those of vexation were fast and taut, etc. those of dispiritedness were taut and thready, etc. in turn. The canonical correlation analysis of emotion & pulse manifestation indicated the close correlation between anxiety & deficiency, moderate, small pulses of Right Cun and strong pulse of Left Cun and Left Guan, vexation & fast pulse of Cunkou except Right Guan, depression & uneven pulse of Left Chi, Right Cun, Right Guan, fright & taut pulse of Right Chi, smooth pulse of Right Cun and powerless pulse of Left Guan, fear & smooth pulse of Left and Right Chi, anger & beating pulse of Right Cun, sorrow & powerful pulse of Right Chi, dispiritedness & thready pulse of Left Cun, Left Guan, Left Chi, Right Chi and soft pulse of Right Guan. Conclusion: The common pulse manifestations, emotions, pulse manifestations related to emotions and correlations between emotions and pulse manifestations were summarized by statistical analysis to supply the literature basis for clinical pulse examination related to emotions. Pulse information recorded from six parts of Cunkou differentiated the“different pulse”, discussed the possibility and method of pulse manifestation to be considered as the objective indication of emotions and supplied the feasible idea and method for emotional disease research.
