Popular literature in Japan-occupied Taiwan and Puppet Manchuria is an important part of the history of modern Chinese literature.Under the influence of the late Qing Dynasty and the modern popular literature of China,the popular literature of the two places has the characteristics of both old and new/elegant and popular.In the 1940s,popular literature in the two places,under the call of building the "Greater East Asia Co-prosperity Circle",was influenced by Japanese popular literature and closely interacted and exchanged with the popular literary circles in North China and East China,thus showing the complex characteristics of colonization,anti-colonization and ambiguous speech.This paper observes the popular literature of Taiwan and Manchukuo from 1940 to 1945,and explores the development of popular literature in the two places by investigating the representative publications of The South and The Qilin,supplemented by the first-hand materials of other newspapers,novels,movies and personal diaries in the same period.In the last stage of Japanese colonial rule,the literary circles of Taiwan and Puppet Manchu were unified in the war discourse of building a "Greater East Asian Co-prosperity Circle".For a time,writers engaged in serious literary creation are "required"to participate in the "Greater East Asian Literature Conference" which has the symbol of "East Asian Co-prosperity",forming a "interactive exchange" situation.engaged in serious literary creation were asked to participate in the "Greater East Asian Literature Conference" which was highly symbolized by "East Asia Co-prosperity",forming a"interactive exchange" situation.Although the creation,circulation and adaptation of popular literature in the two places were influenced by the colonial literary policy,the Japanese colonial authorities attempted to use popular literature to package war mobilization and colonial will in order to "fool the people",but it was dispelled by the"entertainment" function of popular literature itself.In addition,since the May 4th New Literature Movement,the two places have been influenced by the New Culture Movement and produced a number of new literary writers and works.From 1940 to 1945,when the literary creations of the two places were required to contribute to the"wartime" propaganda,writers of the two places,under the pretext of publishing popular works,continued their new literary creation and interacted closely with the literary circles of North China and East China.Under these circumstances,The South and The Qilin are deeply popular and special,showing the "discipline" of everyday life space,and a large number of wartime "good wife and good mother" women who refuse to "modern".The Swordsman Fiction presents two worlds inside and outside the legal system,one is the hero who opposes the Qing Dynasty and restores the Ming Dynasty,the other is the image of the extrajudicial Knight bandits.The detective fiction focuses on two topics:the "secret situation investigation" and the "criminal investigation and espionage prevention".In addition,there are entertainment shaping and cross-regional dissemination of historical figures Confucius and Taiwanese minority girl Shayang.Under the circumstances of war,the colonial literary and artistic policy is pressing step by step.On the contrary,because of the entertainment and consumerism of popular literature itself,the opportunity of "prosperity" has been obtained.However,the bottom of "prosperity" lies in the spiritual predicament of writers who are confronted with the oppression of the current situation,or are eager for freedom and justice.
