Korean literature in Manchuria before liberation is a branch of modern Korean diaspora literature, and furthermore is the origin of Korean literature after liberation which has precious value of literature and aesthetics.Since 1990s,research works has been published by Quan zhe,Cui San-long,Jin Dong-xun,Jin Hu-xiong,Wu Shang-xun,Zhang Chun-zhi in China;Omura Maso in Japan;Oh Yang-ho,Yoon Young-chon,Chae Hun,Chang Paek-il,Chung Duk-Joon in Korea. All the works focused on poems and novels, but formal study on the essays is not carried out yet.It is because of the traditional literary perception that essays do not match up to the high standard of literature. However works such as Comprehensive Essay Collection I,Comprehensive Essay Collection ?,and Travel Notes In Manchuria which widely collected the essay texts written by Korean writers in Manchuria before liberation, have been published by Quan zhe,Cui San-long and other scholars.Essays have the characteristics such as sincere expressions of writers with various subject in limited space and thoughts through profound reflection, and thus they could represent movements of the period and emotions of the public most quickly and effectively.Especially from the view of new historicism, which emphasizes that history is composed of lots of layers and made up of arguments which should be used to restore the history, essays have more values of history and aesthetics than poems or novels which is mainly made up of imagination or fiction. Therefore firstly by applying the method of new historicism, the thesis is to collect and sort out the essays written by Korean writers in Manchuria before liberation and then to testify the nature and essence of Manchuria appeared in the essays.Detailed analysis is carried out from the view and method of imagology of comparative literature on the nature, society and state system of Manchuria by giving examples of particular texts.Typical example is that quite a few texts show the atmosphere of praising and waiting anxiously for the coming of spring, but on the contrary criticize domineering of Japanese imperialist and uncertainty of Manchuria compared with spring, symbol of birth of new life. Then the perception of Korean writers in Manchuria is to be discussed. The perception of Manchuria is closely connected with insight and criticism on colonial modern times. When it comes to discussing the actual situation of "Kingcraft and Paradise" and "Harmony of Five Nationalities" which were boosted by Puppet Manchuria, explores the tendency of the essay texts of that time. Some works help to agree with and highly praise colonial policies, but most of the works criticize Manchuria as the space of coexistence of modernism and colonialism, and sing highly of anti-Japanese movements, martyr's patriotism and sacrifices.Lastly to investigate the real situation of assistance or resistance to Manchuria system,by applying the theory of post-colonialism,hybridity and ambivalence, the thesis is to analyze superficial obedience and underlying resistance which was expressed in the essay texts by the most important writers as Kim Chang-geol,Baek Seok,Kang Kyong-ae,and Hyun Gyung-jun who had made use of writing tactics of post-colonialism to escape from the inspection of the state. The study will be of significance to describe the structure of Korean literature in Manchuria before liberation, and to analyze the actual situation of Manchurian image, colonial modern times of Manchuria, and the typical writing tactics of post-colonialism.
