The Time Consciousness In Iosif Brodsky's Early Poetry

Joseph Brodsky(????? ????????????? ????????,1940-1996)was a Russian American poet,essayist,in limited in 55 years of life he wrote more than one thousand poems,achieved extensive worldwide acclaim and praise highly.Brodsky won the Nobel Prize in literature in 1987 and was twice awarded the American poet laureate in 1991-1992.As an exiled poet who went through trial and imprisonment,forced into a lunatic asylum for treatment,was exiled to a labor camp in the far north,and finally was deported and settled in the United States,he had a different understanding of life and death and time.As a poet and writer who wrote in both Russian and English,he was influenced by the two distinct cultural traditions of Britain,America and Russia.While inheriting the tradition,he was also highly innovative.His expression of time consciousness had a strong personal brand.This paper aims to analyze Brodsky's understanding of time from the perspective of life time and historical time,and to analyze and interpret the question he has been trying to answer in his lifetime poetry creation: "the influence of time on people" and how to deal with the effect of time on people.In general,Brodsky experienced a great change in time consciousness in his early works: the early poems(1957-1961)presented a kind of cyclic time consciousness,life time was represented as the return of life--death--life,and historical time was the monotonous repetition of the past,present and future.Mature poems(1962-1971)show a completely different linear time consciousness.Life time is a one-way flow from birth to death,while historical time is an unrepeatable linear movement between the past,present and future.The effect of time on people is mainly manifested in the decomposition and destruction of the human body,as well as the numbness and corrosion of the human soul in the early poems.In the mature poems,time drives people's death with diseases and aging,and devouring the human soul.The effect of time on human beings arouses the poet's consciousness of resistance and act of redemption: to fight against time with language.But Brodsky's sense of confrontation in his early and mature poems is different.In his early poems,the poet is the absolute master of language,while the latter is completely under the command of the former.In mature poetry,language has become the carrier of the poet's personality.As the representative of the poet's spiritual world and the sustenance of his soul,he keeps and spreads his works with the help of the memory of later generations to resist the influence brought by the passage of time.The poet generally holds a pessimistic attitude towards the result of the confrontation.This paper consists of five parts.In the introduction,the research object,background and significance of the thesis are briefly described,the history and current situation of Brodsky's research in Russia,the west and China are summarized,the development context and trend of Brodsky's study are sorted out,and the research ideas,methods and innovations of the thesis are pointed out.The first chapter takes Brodsky's life time consciousness in his early works as the object of analysis,and points out the connotation,characteristics and the poet's expression methods of life time consciousness in his early and mature poems.The second chapter analyzes Brodsky's awareness of historical time in his early poetry,and points out the essence,expression and expression of his awareness of historical time in his early and mature poetry.The conclusion part summarizes the results of the full text analysis,discusses the connotation and characteristics of Brodsky's earlier poetry time consciousness,and points out the practical significance and research prospect of Brodsky's research on time consciousness.Finally,the thesis references are attached.The research value and innovation of this paper is reflected in the fact that Brodsky is one of the most important poets in Russia and even the world in the 20 th century.The issue of time is the most profound motive and the most important topic of Brodsky's poetry creation,but at present,there is no systematic study on Brodsky's time consciousness as a whole.
