Research On The Succession And Development Of The Peking Opera In Taiwan (1949?2018)

Taiwan Peking Opera has experienced several transformations and changes from 1948 to 2018,by which the features of different eras were engraved in.Its development and the drive of the transformations and changes were the outcome of the internal need of Taiwan Peking Opera and its interaction with the society.In brief,the 70-year development of Taiwan Peking Opera has been through the experiment of the combination of traditional and modern literature and of Chinese and western drama as well as the combination of the Peking Opera and the Kunqu Opera,all of which contributed to the development of modern Taiwan Peking Opera.The Peking Opera in Taiwan before 1948 was not genuine but mixed with the elements of local drama,during which there was no significant development.The military troupes were developing exponentially due to the need of sending political messages to the public from the Taiwan government and of the soldiers' recreation,which were the huge drive for the development of Taiwan Peking Opera.Nonetheless,in the mid and late 1980s,the development of the military troupes was gradually disconnected to the mindset of the current society.Therefore,a question of where to go for Taiwan Peking Opera was seriously discussed.Soon after,a reform on Taiwan Peking Opera began,in which the traditional Peking Opera was transformed into a modern one.Since the mid and late 1990s,Taiwan Peking Opera has been through the experiment of the combination of traditional and modern literature and of Chinese and western drama.The combination of the Peking Opera and the Kunqu Opera were also paid attention to.These innovative and exploratory development has continued for two decades,contributing to the existence and the base for future development of the modern Taiwan Peking Opera.This dissertation,in addition to the introduction and the conclusion,consists of six chapters which respectively organize,analyze and discuss the topics as follows:the political,societal,artistic and cultural environment in Taiwan after 1948;the entertainers coming to act in Taiwan and the development of the Peking Opera troupe involved not only the top three civil troupes but also the professional public troupe mainly consisted of the top four historically famous military troupes;after 1980s,the succession and development of Peking Opera in Taiwan and its interaction with the zeitgeist and the demand of the market,especially the phenomenon that the broadcast of the Peking Opera showing the impact of the market on the change of Peking Opera;the profound effect brought by the Taiwan armed forces5 Peking Opera education,civil Peking Opera education and higher education institutes on the Peking Opera education and on the cultivation of talents;the outcome for the succession and the development of the Taiwan Peking Opera lead by the efforts on the combination of traditional and modern literature,of the Chinese and western drama and of the Peking Opera and the Kunqu Opera.The author is inspired by the fact that the modern Peking Opera is generally popular among the audience.Therefore,in this dissertation,the author reviews its feature in different stages during its development,focuses on the discuss of the succession and the innovation from the perspective of new art value of Peking Opera and provides expectations and reflections for the future development of the Peking Opera.
