The inscriptions on utensils of the Han Dynasty refer to the characters handed down and unearthed on utensils of the Han Dynasty. The inscription is different from the ink handwriting, which refers to the words written on the utensils.Because the bronze mirror inscription has strong beautification and decoration, special investigation is required. The ink handwriting and bronze mirror inscriptions are not within the scope of this article, but according to the needs, individual parts of the text may involve the ink book and bronze mirror inscriptions. The purpose of this article is to use the inscriptions of artifacts in the Han Dynasty as the main research material to investigate the variants in them, summarize and analyze the types and characteristics of the variants in the inscriptions of artifacts in the Han Dynasty, and explain the status and function of the inscriptions of artifacts in the Han Dynasty in the evolution of Chinese characters.Variant characters refer to variations in a stable writing system. They record the same word or morpheme and have the same or similar pronunciation.Variants in the inscriptions of artifacts in the Han Dynasty are a set of constantly changing and coordinated configuration mechanisms.Strokes and components are common structural components.According to the commonalities and differences of component functions, the variant characters in the inscriptions of artifacts in the Han Dynasty can be roughly divided into three categories, namely, component simplified and multiplied variant characters, component displacement variant characters, and component replacement variant characters.Configuration variation creates the necessary conditions for the production of variants. The variant characters in the inscriptions of artifacts in the Han Dynasty are a dynamically evolving, complex and changeable characters.Structural elements are elements that carry meaning and are separated from the configuration according to a certain level, and their functions are different and affect each other. The formation elements play their respective roles in the configuration system of the inscriptions of the artifacts in the Han Dynasty, thus promoting the adjustment and improvement of the configuration system of Chinese characters.According to the consistency of the number of variants and components, the variants in the inscriptions of artifacts in the Han Dynasty can be divided into simplified variants for components and variants for augmented variants;according to the commonality of the combination of variants and components, they can be divided into variants and components in which the relative position of the component changes but the direction of the same component does not change.Variant characters whose relative position has not changed and the direction of the same component is changed, and variant characters whose relative position of the component changes and the direction of the same component is changed;referring to the change of the component form of variant characters,it can be divided into pictophonetic characters,double-tone characters, part of pictophonetic characters and part of double-tone characters,Variant characters replaced by non-phonetic characters. These three variants are relatively consistent in component functions such as quantity, combination relationship, and form.It is feasible to classify the variant characters of the inscriptions on artifacts in the Han Dynasty from the functional consistency of the components. The mutation provides a necessary way for the generation of variant characters. The same meaning of the word or morpheme represented by the original configuration and the variant form is the basis for the formation of variant characters.Variation affects configuration. The structural variation causes the structural divergence and similarity.Assimilation and phonation are two different mutation processes and mutation results.Assimilation is mainly manifested as intra-character assimilation and inter-character assimilation.Phoneticization promotes the transformation of non-picophonic characters to picophonic characters, picophonic characters to dual-tone characters,or pictophonic characters that are different from the original configuration. The categorized and phonetic configurations that are different from the words or morphemes represented by the original configurations are not variants.Variant characters are produced by configuration variation, and variant characters are not the only result of configuration variation of Chinese characters. The variant characters in the inscriptions of artifacts in the Han Dynasty are a dynamically evolving character, and the adjustment and operation of the compositional components affect the relationship of the configuration. The form and structure of the inscriptions on the artifacts evolved from the early Chinese character configuration, and is closely related to the Han dynasty characters, which reflects the historical evolution and inheritance of the configuration. Therefore, the configuration relationship of the variants in the inscriptions of the artifacts in the Han Dynasty includes the configuration relationship of the Chinese characters used in the same historical period, and also covers the inheritance and evolution of the configurations in different historical periods.Variants in the inscriptions of utensils in the Han Dynasty reflect the relationship between Chinese characters to a certain extent. There are some overlaps and overlaps in the relationship between the variants of the inscriptions of the utensils in the Han Dynasty and the characters, the similar characters, the "Jiebi"(??)and "Shibi"(??)in the configuration.Discussing the relationship between these issues and variants shows the complexity and variability of variants.
