The Policy of Reform and Opening up has not only changed China, but also the world.Over the past 40 years,China's comprehensive national strength has been significantly enhanced and its international influence has been expanded. The steady rise of China and the relative slow growth of the Western countries have led to the great changes in the world pattern in the 21 st century.Against the backdrop of ideological emancipation, various social ideological trends emerged in China after the Reform and Opening up,such as the Neoliberalism represented by ‘River Elegy' in the 1980 s,the Nationalism represented by ‘China Says No' in the 1990 s,and the New Authoritarianism represented by ‘China Wave' in the early 21 st century.Chinese intellectuals have always put on their own shoulder the responsibility of assisting and guiding the development of the country as what they would do for their own family, which has been more so after the Reform and Opening up,since when they started to pay more and more attention to the development of China and the changes of the world with unprecedented enthusiasm, and become the creators and promoters of various social ideological trends.Although their views on Sino-Western relations are important factors to China's social ideological trends, they have not received extensive attention and in-depth study. Therefore,to study Chinese intellectuals' Sino-Western views since the Reform and Opening up based on social ideological trends has both theoretical value and practical significance. The purpose of this study is to reveal the core issues, formation mechanism, influencing factors and evolution characteristics of Chinese intellectuals' Sino-Western views since the adoption of the policy of Reform and Opening up,taking into account the general law and the characteristics of the times. This paper takes Marxist Philosophy as the main analytical tool, supplemented by Neoclassical Realism theory. This paper chooses ‘River Elegy',‘China Says No',and‘China Wave' as the typical cases of the social ideological trends in the corresponding three periods of time.By analyzing the Sino-Western views reflected in the three books and the disputes caused by them, the paper restores the panorama of the social ideological trends in the three periods. The research methods used in this paper mainly include case analysis, comparative analysis, deduction and induction.Chinese intellectuals' understanding of Sino-Western relations mainly includes their judgment on the strategic relationship between China and the West, the current development situation of China and the West, and the development trend of China and the West. The formation of Sino-Western views is a process in which Chinese intellectuals use different political and economic theories to understand the current situation and trend of Sino-Western relations. The contrast and combination of Chinese and Western forces are independent variables, the interest demands of Chinese people are intermediary variables, and the Chinese and Western views of Chinese intellectuals are dependent variables. The change of the theme of the times and the shift of the dominant power of civilization will affect the Chinese intellectuals' Sino-Western views.Since the reform and opening up,the evolution of Chinese intellectuals' Sino-Western outlook has shown two distinct characteristics:from weak state mentality to strong state mentality, from binary opposition topluralistic coexistence.Chinese intellectuals often have deviations in their views on China and the West because they are unable to fully grasp accurate information or to correctly interpret the information they have mastered. The Party and the government need to guide more intellectuals to establish a correct Chinese and Western outlook through the Theoretical System of Socialism with Chinese Characteristics.
