The ideology of “working while studying” had been deemed by Luo Zhanglong as the key to a revolutionized new world. It was not until the moment Luo Zhanglong realized that the “work-study ideology” was not the answer to all the social problems in China that he turned to Marxism and started his quest henceforth.Marxist theory of class struggle and the theory of proletarian dictatorship were applied by Luo Zhanglong to help analyze issues pertaining to revolutions in China, which promoted a positive integration of Marxism with Chinese labor movements. These efforts also witnessed the metamorphosis of Luo Zhanglong into a Marxist. As Marxism taking root in him,Luo Zhanglong participated in several irreligious activities and started to develop some anti-religious thoughts.Luo Zhanglong underscored the opposition between science and religion, and asserted that religions had brought nothing but hazards upon society and should be replaced by science.Furthermore,Luo Zhanglong revealed the development of religious ethics, and demystified the nature and harm of religions from the perspective of the Marxist materialism.Being influenced by the scientism tendency at that time,Luo Zhanglong fallibly believed that science was omnipotent.Luo Zhanglong is one of pathbreakers in Chinese Labor Movements, and also one of the founders of the Chinese Trade Unions.Attempts at the theoretical, methodological and tactic explorations of the labor movements helped Luo Zhanglong form profound thoughts on that particular front. He also complemented the earlier theories on labor movements of the Chinese Communist Party, and propelled the progression of the localization of Marxism in China.Among Luo Zhanglong's thoughts on labor movements, the most remarkable one is about the organizing strategies for the Red Trade Union.Crucial factors of the Red Trade Union such as the political party of the labor, the industrial trade union, the work committee of the factories and trade union for special groups were all taken into account by Luo Zhanglong and hence formed a complete Red Trade Union Theory, which promoted an integration of Marxist theory of trade union with Chinese labor movements.Luo Zhanglong is also a democratic revolutionist and a patriot. He exposed the sins and evil nature of imperialism, denounced vehemently the actions of the warlord government that betrayed and humiliated the nation, and he unequivocally defended the sovereignty of China. After the meeting on August 7,1927 Luo Zhanglong started his passionate search for new ways of revolutions in China. He developed mature thoughts on issues like armed struggles, united front and revolutionary regime and so on.As pointed out by Luo Zhanglong, the main tasks in Chinese revolutions are establishing a government of workers, peasants and soldiers that could overthrow the one that represents imperialism,Kuomintang, and building up a new revolutionary Soviet regime.During the period of three “left errors” of Communist Party,Luo Zhanglong came up with some thoughts on anti-leftism.He discerned the dangers and harm that leftism could bring along, and then took courses of action to get things back on track.Ironically, leftism was deeply rooted in Luo Zhanglong's mind as well. The fight led by Luo Zhanglong against the leftism in the party reeks typical leftism per se.It explained why he vetoed all proposals related to the Third Session of the Sixth Central Committee of the CPC and Li Lisan's left errors.Worse still,he initiated a factional fight against Wang Ming due to his disagreement with Wang Ming on issue of Li Lisan's left errors. The Third Plenary Session of the Sixth Central Committee of the CPC witnessed growing conflicts between the two factions,i.e.,the one represented by Luo Zhanglong and the one by Wang Ming. The tension between the two factions was aggravated by the convening of the Fourth Plenary Session of the Sixth Central Committee of the CPC,where Wang Ming took over the leadership of the Central Committee.Oppositions from Luo Zhanglong led him to a series of mistakes including establishing a Special Central Committee that could rival the Central Committee led by Wang Ming. These mistakes resulted in Luo Zhanglong's expulsion from the communist party.Luo Zhanglong's behavior seriously violated the principles of the party discipline and exerted an extremely negative impact on the great cause of the party. Therefore,it is fair to say that Luo Zhanglong's expulsion from the party is “completely necessary and correct” at that time.Luo Zhanglong made tremendous contributions to the localization of Marxism in China by focusing on the issues related to the working class.Even though he was familiarized with Marxist theories, still,he knew very little about the pattern of revolutions in China when he attempted to apply Marxism to analyze the practical problems of the revolutions in China. The immaturity of Luo Zhanglong's thoughts on revolutions in China foreshadowed his wrongdoings later on.By Exploring the early thoughts of Luo Zhanglong and his transformation from a pathfinder in localization of Marxism to a separatist of the Chinese Communist Party, this study bears tremendous implications for the contemporary construction of the Communist Party.
