As developing countries experienced an economic downturn in the 1960s,the so-called pollution-free mass tourism of fast returns for moderate investments was considered a panacea for saving the economy. So it boomed in the third world and attracted the interest of anthropologists and scholars of other disciplines. But soon some scholars pointed out the problems brought about by tourism, such as environmental degradation, the widening gap between the rich and the poor, and the intensification of social conflicts.Due to the excessive influence on the host region from mass tourism, after the 1980s,anthropologists recommended alternative tourism such as ecotourism,community-based tourism, and cultural tourism. This kind of tourism was regarded as the tourism that had the same value as that of nature, society and community. This type of tourism allows visitors and hosts to engage in positive and valuable interactions and share experiences, which benefits the host region.A major shortcoming of tourism research is that anthropologists focus too much on passive social and cultural shocks in the host region, while they rarely pay attention to the active side as how the hosts decide to involve themselves in the tourist industry and why they provides certain tourism souvenirs and services. This thesis takes the example of the tourist development in Daimei Village of Longhai County,Zhangzhou District. After closely monitoring the villagers' involvement in the tourist industry for six years, based on the ethnographic materials obtained through long-term participant observation,I gradually integrated a comprehensive,grass-rooted and in-depth tourist plan to provide a future reference for the villagers to continue developing tourism. And it is also a supplementary case for the research on the lack of host initiative in anthropology. This thesis is divided into seven chapters. The first chapter is the introduction. It briefly describes the reasons for the selection of the questions and the significance of the research. It also reviews the developments in this field and outlines Daimei Village. The second chapter to the fourth chapter are ethnographic materials, introducing the social culture of villagers in Daimei in terms of economy, society and religion. The materials also serve as the basis for further discussion in the following chapters. The fifth and sixth chapter describes the exploration of tourism development in Daimei Village from 2011 to the present and analyzes the behavior of the villagers. The seventh chapter first illustrates the difficulties and problems faced by the tourist development in Daimei Village, and then probes into a deep tourism development plan for the village based on ethnography. The eighth chapter is the conclusion:first the issue of tourism in Daimei Village is reviewed by the principle of alternative tourism. Then it emphasizes the importance of the guidance by panoramic view of anthropology for developing rural tourism. And lastly it reflects on the villagers'initiative in tourism development and its constraints.
