How Style "Relays"?

Since the middle of the 20 th century,there has been a wave of reflection on the concept of "style" in Western academic circles,and many scholars have conducted different degrees of reflection on this term.The American art historian George Kubler,based on the tridimensional vision of the History of Things,carried out a returned thinking on "style".The concepts and methods he put forward has formed a relay collective effect on the construction of the new style history and the transformation of the methods of art history.This article intends to take Kubler as a possible system,and to explore the "past and present" of "style" as a continuous network veins,and try to take Kubler’s style theory as an opportunity,to illuminate the theoretical view of the style history to form an effective exploration of the paradigm of art history.This article is composed of five chapters.The first chapter is based on the tracing and summarizing of the conceptual history and using history of "style",digging out the signs of style crisis,providing contextual support for the "Turning of Style History ",and then emphasizing Kubler’s relay status in discussion of style.Chapters 2 and 3 focus on Kubler’s style theory,methods of style researching and the perspective of History of Things,and explore horizontally his introspect path of style and tridimensional vision of the History of Things.The fourth chapter focuses on exploring the acceptance history of Kubler’s theory and method,so as to highlight the value of Kubler in the construction of the new style history.The fifth chapter attempts to establish the "staggered" view of style history,seeks the "contemporariness" of style theory,and explores the "modulation path" of the method of art history,in order to provide an opportunity to reexamine the biases of style cognition.In the "conjoint research" that takes the "Turning of Style History" as an opportunity,this article points out Kubler’s "relay" status,not only exploring the collective effect of Kubler’s style theory and History of Things at a micro perspective,but also confirming the external stimulus that style reflection brings to the transformation of the overall vision of art history.Therefore,by recognizing the methods of art history,this article aims to transcend the original vision of style research in the value system of art history,thereby forming a "critical consciousness" of art history methods.
