Microtone has a profound cultural connotation and a long history. It can be said that along with the whole process of human music development, especially the continuous development of new music in the 20th century, microtonal material has been widely used in the field of professional music creation, forming the group of composers who created microtonal music has produced rich theoretical and practical results.Georg Friedrich Haas(1953-)is a famous contemporary composer in Austria. He is famous for his use of differential tone composition techniques, and his musical works more or less involve differential tone.Based on a large number of differential pitches,Haas’s works emphasize the overall shaping of timbre and sound, design unique musical forms and structural processes, and form his unique creative style in the inheritance of musical traditions.Through the research on more than 30 works of microtonal music(mainly works with microtone as the main body,to illustrate some techniques, there are also some works involving partial use of microtone),a more comprehensive interpretation of the basic structure and usage characteristics of pitch materials in Haas’s differential tone works, and then conduct a comprehensive analysis of the time elements, texture design, timbre shaping and the important role played by pitch materials in structure generation in differential tone works. At the same time,it examines the music realization and expression in the discourse construction of the composer’s differential tone works, and finally summarizes the main technical characteristics and value embodiment of the composer’s microtonal music. The main methods of this study include:literature research method, music text research method, derivation and verification method, visual quantitative analysis method and so on.The full text is divided into seven chapters, starting from the pitch structure and characteristics of the microtone, and then studying the logic of the whole music composition. The first chapter gives a comprehensive introduction to the historical development of microtonal music in the 20th century, the composer Haas and his creation, and pays more attention to the main music styles and techniques that influenced the composer. The second chapter conducts a large number of case studies on the use of differential tone materials in Haas’s music, and discusses pitch centrality and other pitch material issues under the differential tone system. The third chapter discusses the design of time elements in music, mainly involving the analysis of speed, beat, and rhythmic techniques. At the same time,it discusses the problem of nonlinear time, and summarizes the composer’s specific time element application techniques. The fourth chapter starts with the design of texture shape and timbre, and studies the combination of parts in differential tone works, involving the overall shape of texture and multiple polyphonic techniques. It also discusses the important role played by different playing methods and dynamic modes in the shaping of timbre and sound. The fifth chapter discusses the relationship between pitch material and structure development, based on four general-derived structures, and then analyzes the tone cycle and microtone diffusion, the syntactic development of sonification, and conversion of different pitch systems in the structure, demonstrates the diversity and openness in the composer’s structural development. The sixth chapter selects the composer’s two microtonal works to analyze from a holistic and comprehensive perspective. It is mainly a summary of the above-mentioned technical research, and it is also a supplement to the analysis of the microscopic aspects of music and the overall aspects of structural development. The seventh chapter is an aesthetic elaboration and reflection on the overall construction of the composer’s musical discourse, and theoretically discusses issues such as interpretation and acceptance, narrative and symbolism, pessimistic elements and visual construction, and the pursuit of sound ontology in the entire microtonal works, and discusses the current creation situation and future development prospects of microtonal music.
