The imperative of continuously exploring new frontiers in the Sinicization and modernization of Marxism decisively dictates that we must not abandon the essence of Marxism. To uphold this essence,it is imperative to prioritize and further deepen the study of Marxist theory. The logical premise for forging a new frontier in the Sinicization and modernization of Marxism is that we must continue to profoundly understand and comprehend Marxist theory. This necessitates the ongoing advancement of research and construction projects in Marxist theory to demonstrate the progressive quality of Marxist theory, providing a theoretical foundation for interpreting and validating Marxist practices. This,in turn, better guides the monumental undertaking of socialism with Chinese characteristics in the new era.The ideological thought of Marx and Engels constitutes a crucial element of Marxist theory.Continuing to deepen the study of Marx and Engels’ ideological thought is an inevitable aspect of the theoretical consciousness and action required for the innovative development of Marxism in the new era. While there exists some academic research on Marx and Engels’ ideological thought, the comprehensive and systematic exploration of this subject remains limited.Building upon the classical works of Marx and Engels, this paper endeavors to elucidate the historical evolution of their ideological thought, delve into its main content and fundamental characteristics, and succinctly summarize its theoretical and practical value in contemporary China. This article extensively analyzes the historical background, intellectual origins, historical evolution, main content, basic characteristics, and contemporary significance of the ideological thought of Marx and Engels, structured into six chapters as follows:Chapter One: Introduction. This section presents the research background and significance of the paper. It reviews the current domestic and international research status on the ideological thought of Marx and Engels.Based on this overview,it forms a research summary, establishing the research framework of this paper and specifying the research methodology.Chapter Two: The Historical Background and Intellectual Origins of Marx and Engels’ Ideological Thought.Firstly,it clarifies the basic concepts of consciousness and ideology.Secondly,it elucidates that the vigorous rise of the nineteenth-century European working-class revolutionary movement, the widespread popularity of various socialist ideologies, and the extensive influence of idealistic ideological thoughts form the historical background for the emergence of Marx and Engels’ ideological thought.Thirdly,it analyzes how Trasí’s "Science of Ideas," Kant’s Critique of Philosophy,Hegel’s Phenomenology of Spirit, and Feuerbach’s critique of religion constitute important intellectual origins for the formation of their ideological thought.Chapter Three: The Historical Evolution of Marx and Engels’ Ideological Thought. It roughly traversed four periods: Before 1844 marked the embryonic stage of their ideological thought;from 1844 to 1856 was the period of its formation;1857 to 1880 constituted the phase of deepening;and from 1881 to 1895 represented the stage of refinement.Chapter Four: The Main Content of Marx and Engels’ Ideological Thought.Firstly,it summarizes the interpretation of the essential meaning of Marx and Engels’ ideological thought, namely, the intellectual activities of universal significance, the maintenance of class interests, and the spiritual reflection of productive life practices.Secondly,it expounds on the basic categories of ideology, broadly categorized as "general ideology" and, based on a materialist historical perspective,"scientific ideology." Thirdly,it explores the fundamental functions of ideology, serving as a mental condition for historical creation,a tool for maintaining class interests, and a weapon for consolidating the forces of struggle. Finally,it elucidates several specific forms of ideology.Chapter Five: The Fundamental Characteristics of Marx and Engels’ Ideological Thought.Firstly, the ideological thought of Marx and Engels is organically composed of various forms, scientifically expressing the revolutionary will of the proletariat and possessing the scientific nature of a thought system.Secondly,it criticizes idealistic ideological thought, exposing the bourgeoisie’s maintenance of specific interests and demonstrating a critical orientation. It highlights a materialistic historical perspective, based on the practical struggles of the proletariat, embodying the practicality of its intellectual origins.Thirdly,it reflects the interests and demands of the proletariat and the broader population, seeking freedom and liberation for the proletariat and all humanity, showcasing the people-oriented value orientation. Finally, this thought, evolving with the rise of the European proletarian revolutionary movement and improving with the enhancement of Marx and Engels’ theoretical literacy, embodies the developmental nature of its formation process.Chapter Six: The Contemporary Significance of Marx and Engels’ Ideological Thought. The ideological thought of Marx and Engels is a significant component of Marxist theory and forms the theoretical foundation of the ideological framework of socialism with Chinese characteristics.Against the backdrop of unprecedented global changes and the comprehensive strategy of the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation encapsulated in the "Two Centenary Goals," the ideological thought of Marx and Engels not only provides methodological guidance for exploring new issues in the field of contemporary Chinese ideology but also establishes the fundamental principles for the Party to consistently excel in ideological work in the new era. Moreover,it offers practical guidance for fortifying Marxist ideological education in the new era, serves as a guiding force for uniting the people in their pursuit of a better life, and furnishes a scientific thinking methodology for conducting propaganda, ideological, and cultural initiatives in the new era.
