Since the reform and opening up,China’s economy has developed at a high speed and has scored achievements that have attracted worldwide attention.Consumption has attracted much attention as one of the troikas driving economic development. In 2019,the contribution rate of China’s final consumption expenditure to GDP was 57.8%,and the contribution rate of investment and net exports was 31.2% and 11.1%.The pull effect on economic growth is 3.5%,1.9% and 0.7%.It can be seen from the data that consumption has become the main driving force for the sustained and stable growth of China’s economy, and its pulling effect on GDP has significantly exceeded that of investment and net exports.Generally speaking, residents’ consumption expenditure accounts for more than 80% of final consumption expenditure,so the level of resident consumption often determines the level of final consumption rate. However, for a long time,China’s residents’ consumption has been sluggish, and it has been in a state of low consumption and high savings.Especially for rural residents, their spending power is much lower than that of urban residents.Statistics show that in 2019 the per capita consumption expenditure of rural residents nationwide was 13328 yuan, and the per capita consumption expenditure of urban residents in the same period was 28063 yuan, and there is still a big gap between urban and rural residents’ consumption, and rural consumption has become China’s consumption depression. In addition, consumption is not only the driving force of social production, but also the direct embodiment of people’s needs for a better life. The rural revitalization strategy is related to the well-being of the people’s livelihood, and can "seek the benefits of the people’s livelihood and solve the people’s livelihood worries".Increasing the consumption of rural residents is an important manifestation of improving people’s livelihood and well-being,and it is also an important embodiment of improving the quality of life and achieving the goal of a prosperous life.More importantly, the development of the Internet has had a profound impact on farmers’ lives and agricultural production, and as the core technology of networking and informatization,it has undergone subversive changes to the original mode of production and life, which is to develop modern agriculture, promote rural innovation and entrepreneurship, and increase farmers’ incomes. An important means of increasing peasant consumption. Therefore,in the context of the implementation of the national digital rural strategy,it is of great significance to study the impact of Internet development on the consumption of rural residents, give full play to the consumption effect of the Internet, and develop the potential of rural consumption and promote consumption upgrading, which is of great significance for expanding domestic demand, promoting the sustained and healthy development of the national economy and meeting the aspirations of rural residents for a better life.In view of this, this paper analyzes the relevant literature,on the basis of grasping the development of rural Internet in China and the changes in the consumption of rural residents, using the provincial panel data from 2009 to 2019 to empirically examine the impact of consumption level, consumption structure and urban-rural consumption gap of rural residents by the development of rural Internet.Specifically, the whole text consists of seven chapters: the first is the introduction, which introduces the background and significance of the research in this paper, the objectives and content of the research, the data and research methods used, and summarizes the innovations and shortcomings of the research. The first chapter focuses on defining the core concepts used in this article and reviewing the relevant literature. The second chapter is the statistical description and correlation analysis of the main variables, and the comprehensive index of rural Internet development level in various provinces in China from 2009 to 2019 is measured by entropy method. In the third chapter, according to the theory of resident consumption and the theory of Internet economy, the method of deductive reasoning is used to construct an analytical framework for the impact of Internet development on the consumption of rural residents, laying a theoretical foundation for the empirical analysis of the following articles.Based on the provincial panel data from 2009 to 2019,the fourth chapter empirically analyzes the impact effect of rural Internet development on the consumption level of rural residents, analyzes the influence path of income effect and market-wide effect using the mediation effect model, and analyzes the spatial spillover effect of Internet technology using spatial econometric model.Based on the provincial panel data from 2009 to 2019 and the data of the China Household Tracking Survey(CFPS),the fifth chapter empirically analyzes the impact and heterogeneity of rural Internet development on the consumption structure of rural residents from a macro and micro perspective.Based on the provincial panel data from 2009 to 2019,the sixth chapter empirically analyzes the impact of rural Internet development on the consumption gap between urban and rural residents.Chapter 7 mainly summarizes the content of the whole text and puts forward relevant policy recommendations based on the conclusions. The main conclusions of this paper: First, the overall level of Internet development in China is on the rise, but the gap between urban and rural areas is obvious, regional development is unbalanced, and there is a large "digital divide".During the period from2009 to 2019,China’s Internet developed rapidly and the scale of Internet users expanded rapidly, but the difference in Internet penetration rate between urban and rural areas was still large. The overall level of rural Internet development showed an upward trend during the sample period, but the differences between provinces and regions were obvious.Second, the development of the rural Internet will help improve the consumption level of rural residents, promote the upgrading of consumption structure, and narrow the gap between urban and rural residents’ consumption. The development of rural Internet has a significant role in promoting the consumption level of rural residents in the eastern, central and western regions, and the impact on the consumption of rural residents in the central and western regions is more obvious. From the perspective of consumption type, the impact on the gap between urban and rural residents’ enjoyment consumption is the largest, followed by the development consumption gap, which has the smallest impact on the survival consumption gap;from a regional point of view, the impact on the consumption gap between urban and rural residents in the central and western regions is greater than that in the eastern region.Third, the impact of rural Internet development on rural residents’ consumption has a significant spatial spillover effect.Under the three spatial weight matrices, the development of rural Internet has significant direct effects, spatial spillover effects and total effects on the consumption of rural residents, and the direct effects are greater than the indirect effects, which shows that the development of rural Internet is not only conducive to promoting the consumption level of rural residents in this province, but also promoting the consumption expansion of rural residents in neighboring areas.Fourth, the Internet can indirectly act on the consumption of rural residents through the income effect, that is,the growth of farmers’ income in rural areas internet development on rural areas Some of the mediating effects have been played in the impact of consumption expansion and consumption structure upgrading.Fifth, the impact of Internet use on farmers’ consumption is clearly heterogeneous among different groups.Combined with the above research conclusions, the following policy recommendations are put forward: First,it is necessary to build an inclusive Internet to promote the balanced development of regions, urban and rural areas.Second, strengthen the construction of rural Internet infrastructure and improve the rural Internet service system.Third, attach importance to the spatial effect of Internet technology and strengthen inter-provincial exchanges and cooperation.Fourth, raise the income level of rural residents and enhance their purchasing power.Fifth, guide farmers to use the Internet rationally and improve their ability to use the Internet.Sixth, strengthen data and information security guarantees and build a healthy network environment. The research in this paper is innovative in the following areas:1.Research perspective innovation. In the past, the literature on the study of residents’ consumption is relatively rich, and the research on the impact of the Internet on resident consumption has only emerged in recent years, and the relevant literature is still relatively lacking, especially from the perspective of the development of the rural Internet, the literature on the impact of the Internet on the consumption of rural residents is still very insufficient. From the perspective of macro and micro, this paper combines economics and communication science and other disciplines, and systematically analyzes the impact and path of Internet development on the consumption level of rural residents, the upgrading of consumption structure and the consumption gap between urban and rural residents. Therefore, from the perspective of research and the integration of disciplines,it has a certain degree of innovation.2.Analyze framework innovation.Assessing the impact of Internet development on rural residents’ consumption from a single or partial perspective is not conducive to scientific understanding of the systematic impact of the Internet on rural residents’ consumption, and it is difficult to provide scientific guidance for policy formulation. In this paper, the consumption level, consumption structure and consumption gap are included in the unified research category, and the core concepts and unified analysis framework based on the connection between level, structure and gap are constructed.Firstly, the impact of Internet development on rural residents’ consumption is theoretically analyzed, and then the provincial panel data of China and the data of China Household Tracking Survey(CFPS)are used to empirically examine rural areas The direct relationship, intrinsic relationship and spatial spillover effect between Internet development and rural residents’ consumption.3.Research methods and analytical means innovation. This paper adheres to the combination of theoretical analysis and empirical research, and systematically analyzes the impact of rural Internet development on rural residents’ consumption.Specifically, first of all, based on the connotation of Internet development and the evaluation index system related to the construction of digital villages, under the principle of scientificity, systematicness and feasibility,an evaluation index system for the development level of rural Internet has been constructed, and the level of rural Internet development has been measured.Secondly, the mechanism of influencing the development of rural Internet on the consumption of rural residents is discussed by introducing intermediary variables. Finally,by constructing a spatial econometric model, the spatial spillover effect of the impact of rural Internet development on rural residents’ consumption is empirically tested.
