Population issues is one of the major problems faced by huma nity in the 21st century.Asthe world's largest population country,China's population is approaching the limits. MasteringPopulation information accurately has very great significa nce in economic development andbuild ing a harmonious society. The traditiona l methods such as the field survey, statistica lanalysis , population maps and any other qualitative analysis , can't meet the realistic needs.But GIS technology is becoming more and more widely used because of the spatial analysisand thema tic mapping capabilities .In recent years, with the rapid development of computer technology and spatialinformation technology,GIS technology has become more mature. In China, some scientificresearch institutions , universities and companies which engage in GIS appeared. Many GISsoftware tools were designed and then pla yed an important role in ma ny areas. At present,GIS has been used in environmental protection, disaster prediction, city pla nning andconstructionThis paper introduces something about GIS, including the concept, trend , secondarydevelopment technology and the applica tion in statistica l demographic information. In thepaper, I take the population of Sichua n for example, collect a wide range of information ofeach city in Sichua n and then I select Visua l C #, SuperMap Deskpro, SuperMap Objects asthe ma in tools to develop a software called population GIS of Sichua n. After being tested, thesoftware can achieve some functions such as population information search, thematicmapping of population Information, population prediction and so on.
