The development goals of Dunhuang Geopark, China are geoheritages protection, the improvement of science literacy and tourism development. According to this, it is urgent affairs that how to protect geoheritages effectively, develop natural resources adequately and manage tourism more availably. In the geopark booming today, traditional geopark’s management mode is far from satisfying the needs of managers and the management is toward the direction of the informatization, networking and automation development increasingly. Geographical Information System(GIS) which has the core of spatial information processing plays an irreplaceable role in the construction of geoparks because of its enhanced functions of spatial information management, spatial information analysis, spatial query and 3D image display and so on. Applying GIS to establish Geopark GIS has become the content of the work of many geopark constructions. According to National Geopark plan revision technical requirements published by Ministry of Land and Resources in 2010, all geoparks are required to complete information constructions and enhance the constructions of database, monitoring system and network.After a sufficient investigation and considering and analyzing administrative department’s actual requirements of Dunhuang Geopark, China, the author designed the geopark’s management system and determined its function. The management information system of Dunhuang Geopark, China is based on the architecture of C/S with adopting Super Map as the secondary development platform and using SQL Server 2005 to establish the database.The system has the following characteristics: concise UI, user-friendly control and highly secure. The system combines GIS and database organically which not only has normal database system’s data management function such as the managements of geoheritages’ attribute data and the geopark’s attribute data, but also has spatial analysis function of GIS such as the management of geoheritages’ spatial data, network analysis of the best travel route and buffer analysis and so on. Seamless integration of multisource spatial data is used to realized digitmap intergration, multisource and multiscale data fusion and updating management of geoheritage spatial data. And it also realizes distributed storage and centralized management of spatial data by metadata manager connecting database.During this project, after the processes of earlier stage’s system demand analysis, medium stage’s systematic design, system implementation and later stage’s system maintenance and evaluation, the author is in strict accordance with the approach and method of design of application-oriented GIS and finished the system development and related document which provides definite reference for the information construction of Dunhuang Geopark, China in the future.
