Louis Pasteur (1822?895) was a great French chemist and microbiologist in 1800s, the founder of modern microbiology and immunology. Pasteur had received so many great achievements in different science areas such as stereochemistiy, clystRllography, microbiology and medicine. Furthermore, as a layman of medicine, he had found a new erm theory of disease?and immunology, leading a great change in medicine. At the same time, Pasteur brought great transform in medicine research methods by drawing physical and chemical research methods into medicine research, specially using microscope creatively and inventing microbial culture media.Pasteur was the first person who bad related science research closely with productive practices in science bistoiy. This kind of pioneering work made Pasteur and his students?research step into good development circles. Pasteur was also the first person using the press to support science. He argued with his opponents on newspapers, and let the public learn about his science research by test in public, and raised money for research by the press. The Pasteur Institute, the greatest science research organization in the l9 century in the world, was built completely by contributed money from society.cience has no national boundaries, but a scientist has his motherland.?Pasteur thought that science research should belong to the whole world and mustserve the whole world, but a nation could not be strong without science. Pasteur sciencespirit is worth venerating by us. As his science contributions his sciencespirit left the world a great deal of legacy, which encouraged the followers to carry on with his cause.In I SOOs, France was always in turbulence contrasted to other large nations in Europe. But its science and technology was still in lead. It was French citizen education system that had trained many scientists with poor family background as Pasteui What is more, it was the tolerant society in France that had given favorable environment for scientists.Studying Pasteur is very important for China today. In this paper, Pasteur contributions, methods and spirit in science is discussed from the angle of the Science of Science. It is hoped that the study will be enlighten for Chinese science research.
